Homecoming Festivals

Homecoming Festivals are held in just about every major Family Island, with the exception of New Providence and Grand Bahama.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture makes a financial contribution to most of the homecoming festivals but in general the Local Island Committees spare-head and are responsible for generating the funds necessary for the successful execution of their event.

The homecoming festivals are initially a period for Family Island Reunions when persons from the particular Island Community are encouraged to return to their roots and renew family and community ties. The festival also serves to promote community spirit and offer a venue for exposure of the culture and culinary talents of persons in the community.
The touristic value of these festivals is limitless as locals, visitors and residents participate in the festivities.

Heritage Festival Support

With the heightening of Cultural Awareness and the movements for the perservation of things Bahamian, numerous Heritage Festivals are held in the various Family Islands annually.

The National Arts Festival sponsored a Heritage Festival in 1997 that involved a number of Islands. These festivals are designed to expose and preserve practices that are peculiar to the specific islands.

Financial support for these festivals have been on an individual consideration. We now need to take an overall look and possibly provide them with a set amount as seed money for their festival.
