Cultural Events of National Importance

While Clement Bethel was the Chief Cultural Affairs Officer at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Affairs, he conceived the Theatre-in-the-Park in September, 1982.

Its purpose was to encourage local residents to become involved in the theatre. He said that it was not especially created for tourists, as that would have excluded the Bahamian element. Instead, the concerts would be geared towards entertaining Bahamians.

These concerts would promote an interest in theatre, music, drama, and even the culinary arts. It could also inspire local residents outside the city to become involved.

At present Keva Cartwright-Knowles is the Drama Officer in charge of this particular event.

It usually takes place in December in addition to one or two other performances at different times of the year.
