The Department of Archives was established by an Act of Parliament in 1971 and recieved departmental status in 1981. It is the final repository of permanent records and archives of the government. The Chief Justice is the legal head of the department. However, administratively the office is under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Daily management and control is performed by the Director of Archives.

Archives Mission - To ensure that the historical, documentary, material and cultural heritage of The Bahamas are preserved for future generations by:
  • acquiring documents from both government and private sources
  • preserving documents through conservation methods, microfilm and digital technology
  • providing the right environment in which to store the documents
  • establishing and maintaining an effective Records Management Programme
  • implementing a comprehensive workable disaster preparedness plan, providing security for the records and their custodians.
