Island Information
Ragged Island use to have quite a prosperous Salt Industry. The Salt ponds were opened on Ragged in the late 19th Century by Mr. Duncan Taylor – hence Duncan Town, the only settlement on Ragged. The Salt industry has almost stopped now but up to a few years ago, salt was still an industry.
Before Castro took over in Cuba Ragged Island has a good trade with that country.
Trade was also carried on with Haiti which supplied Ragged Islanders and the Bahamas with mangos. This was stopped because it was believed the mangos were bringing in disease.
Hurricane Donna swept many roofs off houses and left considerable land damage. After 1950 many inhabitants left Ragged Island and came to Nassau.
Fishing is still done on a small scale. One or two boats with fish-wells take their catch to Nassau.
There are about 210 inhabitants on Ragged Island, 80 of whom are adults. The rest are children. There are only about 15 men.
