The Bain and Grants Town Urban Renewal Centre officially re-opened its After School Programme on Monday, October 8 at the Archdeacon William E. Thompson Computer Centre on Blue Hill Road, next to St. Agnes' Rectory.
Mr. Brensil Rolle, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Housing and National Insurance delivered the keynote address stressing the importance of the Urban Renewal Programme to residents of Bain and Grants Town who will benefit from the collaborative effort between the church, businesses, individuals and each other.
Mr. Rolle urged students and parents to take advantage of the free programme as an opportunity to use the internet to “travel while still in Nassau” and network with the rest of the world.
He also encouraged them to share their experience with others and urge friends and other students to become a part of the Urban Renewal Programme.
Mr. Rolle also told parents to keep their children interested in wanting to learn about computers.
Ms. Ella Lewis, Coordinator of Urban Renewal, spoke to the children about being on the “right track” and doing their best. She also warned about going on websites that could lead to exploitation and abuse.
She said that local staff in the Urban Renewal Centre will be on hand to help students with their homework and school projects, as well as track their performance and accomplishments.
Ms. Lewis said the Centre has complete computer systems at the disposal of students and that they should look for ways to make The Bahamas a better place.
