NASSAU, Bahamas – Minister of Housing and National Insurance, the Hon. Kenneth Russell confirmed in parliament Wednesday that despite allegations, there have been no terminations from the Urban Renewal programme.

Refuting a claim made during Wednesday’s House sitting by West End and Bimini MP Obie Wilchcombe, that 40 persons on Grand Bahama were terminated from the programme, Minister Russell told parliamentarians that there have been no terminations from the programme in Grand Bahama or anywhere else in the country.

He pointed out that persons who worked in Urban Renewal had come from the Department of Social Services.

“Based on the study that we did in the reorganization of Urban Renewal those persons are to go back to Social Services and be redeployed by Social Services,” Minister Russell said.

He indicated that some of the persons will still be working on and carrying out case aid work for Urban Renewal, while some will be working in other programmes for Social Services.

Others, he noted, will be placed elsewhere in the Ministry of Health and Social Development and other ministries that need assistance.

“That is what the plan is because the ministry responsible for Urban Renewal needed to be able to put together its own programme and have persons who are responsible to us working to push those programmes,” Minister Russell said.

He emphasized that there is only one person working for Urban Renewal under the Ministry of Housing in Grand Bahama, and confirmed that the individual “is still working for Urban Renewal and doing what they have been doing before.”

“We will make a much broader statement when we kick-off the new Urban Renewal thrust and programme here in New Providence in two weeks,” Minister Russell said.
