Ministry of Health and Social Development Report Case of Malaria in Exuma

Bahamas Information Services
08/14/2007

The Ministry of Health and Social Development wishes to advise the public that a case of malaria has been diagnosed in a recent visitor to Exuma and that the Department of Public Health in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Health Services has mobilized a team to investigate the possibility of other cases.

Both Departments are continuing control measures for monitoring malaria in Exuma. To date there is no evidence of circulating malaria in Exuma.

The public is reminded that malaria is transmitted by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito which feeds from dusk to dawn. One can avoid being bitten by wearing long sleeved clothing when out at night or early mornings and applying insect repellent.

The common symptoms of malaria include recurrent bouts of fever, chills, body aches, pains and headaches. Concerns may also be referred to the Department of Public Health at 502-4728 or the Ministry of Health at 502-4700.
