Mission Statement

To promote the development, preservation, affirmation and celebration of the cultural life of the Bahamian community and to stimulate cultural and creative expressions at all levels of society. This will be done through research and the holding of festivals and workshops and the encouragement of the performing and visual arts.

From the 16th July to 20th July, 2008 E. Clement National Arts Festival outstanding winners participated in Washington's Summer Mentoring program culminating in concerts. The entire event was a success.

CARIFESTA AUGUST 22- AUGUST 31, 2008

Georgetown, Guyana, South America, August 22-31, 2008. The Bahamas will send a contingent of one hundred and ten visual artists, filmmakers, junkanooers, dancers, singers, musicians, writers and theatre artists to participate in this event, increasingly recognized as the premier occasion for sharing national culture within the region and showcasing Caribbean culture to the world.

According to the Nassau Guardian,it has the largest group of visual artists. They include: Max Taylor, Heino Schmid, Chantel Bethel, Blue Curry, Kishan Munroe, Allan Wallace and John Cox. The filmmakers include Kareem Mortimer and Cecil Moss.

Festival 2008

The Final Concert, consisting of winners commenced after 8:00 p.m. with the National Anthem by Mr. Francis Fawkes CAO. This cultural extravaganza took place at Arawak Cay with overflowing crowds and tourists in attendance. The agreeable weather allowed another successful event to proceed. There were participants from New Providence, Grand Bahama and the Family Islands. The performances included Choral Verse Speaking; Story -Telling; Abaco's New Entry Band's delightful performances; Solo Singing by Osano Neely; Solo Drumming by Howard Bethel Jr; Destiny Dance Group and many others who did their best.

EXPLORING THE ARTS

The Festival has reintroduced The Arts Exhibition and Competition under the Theme, "Exploring the Arts" at the Central Bank. The adjudicator, Mr. Heino Schmid, has travelled to the Family Islands and Grand Bahama selecting works for the show. Mr. Ellery Deveaux is the Visual Officer and co-ordinator of the show. The general observation was the resources, motivation and exposure have to be increased, but the potential is there at this early stage.

CARIFESTA X

The first "CARIFESTA" was held in Guyana in 1972; since then, eight festivals have been held. The most recent was held in Trinadad and Tobago in September, 2006. CARIFESTA is a ten day event that happens every two years. The next CARIFESTA is proposed to be in 2008 in Guyana from 15 August - 24 August, 2008. In 2010, CARIFESTA XI will be held in the Bahamas. There are 64 participatig entities in the Bahamas featured, including Morro Castle.
