Frequently Asked Questions



1. What is the duration of the process?
The entire process last about 5 hours – approximately 1 hour for registration and medical assessment, and 4 hours for the education component.
    2. Who should attend?
    Anyone who works in the production, handling, storage, transportation, preparation and serving of food (including beverages and water).
      3. Where are classess held?
      Blue Hill Road Clinic. Two sessions are held daily, Monday through Friday, at 9:00am – 1:00pm and 1:00pm – 5:00pm. However, participants should schedule an additional hour for registration and medical assessment.
        4. How do I register?
        Registration is made by calling 325-5553 or 325-8076 (between 8:00am and 4:00pm weekdays).
          5. What is the course fee?
          The course fee is $10.00.
            6. What are the criteria for receiving a Food Handlers' Certificate?
            The participant should complete 4 contact hours in basic food safety, satisfactorily complete a short evaluation and complete a rapid health assessment interview.
              7. What is the maximum class size?
              Maximum amount of persons allowed per class, at the clinic, is 30; we try to keep classes relatively small so to allow participation and effective evaluation of all attendants.
                8. How long is the certification valid?
                1 year.

                  9. What is the procedure for re-certification?
                  The same programme should be repeated.

                  10. Why do I need to take this course?
                    · Food borne illness impacts the customer, the worker and the industry as a whole.
                      · Even 1 incident of food borne illness can be very costly to a business.

                      · The customer has a right to expect food handlers to provide safe food.
