Future Nurses of The Bahamas
In 2000, the Ministry of Health embraced the novel idea of a programme targeting very young residents, so that their interest in nursing as a career could be stimulated and sustained. The “Future Nurses of The Bahamas” Programme was thus born, in November 2001.
One of the short term goals was to increase the number of participants in the “Nurses Cadet” Programme, with a view to further enrolling in the nursing programmes at the College of The Bahamas in the future. The purpose of the programme is to assist participants to develop initial, positive concepts of nurses and the profession. It also seeks to develop social skills and a sense of stewardship and caring for persons in their communities.
Participants are drawn from students in grades 5 though 9. Unfortunately, the programme is not offered in the Family Islands at this time.
