Vision
Ensuring the health and well-being of older persons in The Bahamas.

Mission
To provide comprehensive healthcare that will contribute to the total well-being of all older residents, thus preserving complete geriactivity, for as long as possible.

Overview
The proportion of older residents is increasing rapidly in The Bahamas. The Government is considering the impact this has on a wide range of public services, and is currently developing a national plan, which is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Department Social Services, for the further development of older adult healthcare.

We all must develop a new mindset about ageing and healthcare for older persons. The old notion that ageing is an inevitable process of disease and deterioration is just not true. However, many people still think of healthy ageing as merely preventing, postponing or treating disease; it actually depends upon a variety of factors, including physical and cognitive functions, community involvement, quality of life and social involvement. The concept of healthy ageing considers the health of the whole person.

Traditionally, the terms “elderly or older persons” refer to individuals aged 65 and over. However, within the context of the National Health Care System, older adults are classified into 3 groups: 65 – 74 years, 75 – 84 years and 85 years and over. <<see more>>
