 | Relations with the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA)
The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) has control over the 233 sq miles of Freeport since the Hawksbill Creek Agreement, which was signed in 1955. In 1993 some of the benefits under the Act were extended to 2054. The GBPA grants licences to conduct business in the “Port Area”. Nevertheless, The Bahamas Government must approve all new foreign entrants to the Freeport economy. The GBPA and the Grand Bahama Development Co. are continually engaged in the promotion of major investments in the Port. Proposals for major development are brought to the attention of the BIA at an early date. Major developments in the Port Area include the Freeport Container Transshipment Terminal, the Our Lucaya Golf and Casino Resort and the redevelopment of the Grand Bahama International Airport, the Polymers International and the Grand Bahama Power Company (Southern Electric). The GBPA jointly runs the harbour and airport companies along with divisions of the Hutchinson Whampoa Group of Companies
