A Meeting of the Steering Committee of UNESCO World Heritage, ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage and Protection and Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expressions Convention’ was held at the Ministry of Education on the 13^th September 2018.

The Steering Committee examined the way forward in promoting the ideals of UNESCO, protecting national cultural and intangible cultural heritage, and accessing technical, financial and consultancy assistance in the areas of UNESCO competency, being Education, Culture, Science, and Communication.

The Bahamas is replete with Cultural Heritage sites, dating back to Lucayan times, natural wonders and various cultural assets that are sprinkled throughout the archipelago, which is of interest to UNESCO whose membership consists of 195 countries around the world.

Bahamas Ambassador to UNESCO, HE Desmond Edwards said that UNESCO is responsible for coordinating international cooperation in education, science, culture and communication. It strengthens the ties between nations and societies and mobilizes the wider public so that each child and citizen has access to a quality education, lives in a cultural environment rich in diversity and dialogue, where heritage serves as a bridge between generations and peoples, can fully benefit from scientific advances, and where each citizen can enjoy full freedom of expression, the basis of democracy.
