As a part of the BNGIS Centre’s mission to advance the use of modern technologies in the Civil Service, training in Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is provided. GPS is a navigational aid that utilizes 24 satellites that orbit the earth in a grid pattern. There are always six to eight satellites that are able to communicate with any given position on earth at any given time. What this does is give the user the ability to find any place on earth at any time day or night.

GPS training for government agencies may be conducted by international specialists, the BNGIS Centre and strategic partners with GPS expertise. Training includes various modules including background lecture, GPS Field exercise to reinforce data collection techniques and allow students to get hands on operations of the GPS hand held units. Training also includes a compact GPS processing and downloading to GIS session.

GPS/GIS system provides the ability for operators to locate, identify, attribute and map the various components of their systems while creating a database to store, evaluate, analyze, and retrieve system information.

The GPS training plays an essential role in equipping Public Service officials with modern tools to support business operations including, but not limited to, asset and fleet management, vehicular tracking for security services, Road maintenance and planning new corridors, utility infrastructure, forestry management, Address ranging, urban/landuse/long range planning, marine management, disaster preparedness, tracking diseases, topographic mapping, detail criminal activities and much more.
