NASSAU, The Bahamas – The final touches are being made to the Southern Recreation Grounds to transform that historic spot into a modern, multi-faceted space in the Over-the-Hill Community.

Executives of the Over-the-Hill Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister conducted a walk-through on July 1 (2020) to inspect work being carried out by Bahamas Striping Group of Companies (BSGC), and other workers.

The BSGC workmen were putting colour sealant on the basketball court, the landscaping moved forward with the planting of native flora and fauna; equipment for the outdoor fitness centre and for the children’s playground was already installed.

Additionally, storyboards and signage recalling the history of the Grounds as a site of assembly for critical events in Bahamian history were being unwrapped. And, being carried out were finishing touches to the pathway to allow better access to nearby facilities such as the Lillian Weir-Coakley Public Library.

Other features and amenities will include better-organized public parking spaces, a new softball diamond field, the installation of Wi-Fi for Internet access and CCTV cameras for safety and security measures.

Grand Opening of the Southern Recreation Grounds will be announced shortly.

A number of private partners are involved in financing the redevelopment of the Southern Recreation Grounds, such as employees of the Royal Bank of Canada, and Albany Bahamas.

Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis foreshadowed the completion of the Southern Recreation Grounds during his Communication to the 2020/2021 Budget Debate in the House of Assembly on Monday, June 22, 2020.

The redevelopment of parks and recreational facilities is one of the components of the Over-The-Hill Community Development Partnership Initiative launched by the Prime Minister in May 2018.

The Initiative is built around six key pillars designed to fully restore the Over-the-Hill communities.  These areas include:

  • Social Empowerment;
  • Economic Empowerment;
  • Rejuvenation;
  • Smart Technology;
  • Green and Sustainable Technology; and
  • Programmes for the Youth and the Elderly.
