NASSAU, The Bahamas – Some 600 public school administrators representing schools throughout the nation are participating in the annual Public School Administrators Conclave taking place at Melia Nassau Beach resort from August 20-21, 2018. The theme of the two-day event, organized by the Department of Education, is “Understanding and Executing Five P’s for Effective School Leadership: Purpose, Planning, Policies, Practices and Partnerships."

In his address at the opening ceremony, the Hon. Jeffrey Lloyd, Minister of Education, said the government will legislate for a revision, after five years, of the public-school curriculum.

“Curriculum is going to be of great focus this year,” said Minister Lloyd. “Another thing about curriculum is we don’t have any standard revision policy. We are going to put it in law that the curriculum must be revised every five years.”

Moreover, Minister Lloyd described technical vocational education as “critical” and underscored the importance of the need for math and technical vocational education.

“The people of Spanish Wells are not so much interested in history, geography and those social subjects, as important as they are, and as much as you think they should have them. They are interested in knowing how to fish and fix boats. They’re interested in the environment and they can prove it because they have generations in their families who have done it, and done it successfully.

“You and I don’t have the right to tell them what their talents are and how they should develop them.  Making it possible: that’s the government’s responsibility -- and you and I are the government. We have to give them more technical, vocational education so they can pursue the area of their interest and not ours,” he said.

Session topics include: School Leadership in the 21st Century, Restorative Discipline Practices, Emotional Intelligence, and School Administrators and The Four Disciplines of Execution.
