NASSAU, Bahamas (March 28, 2019) – ShotSpotter Gunshot Detection Technology was officially launched in New Providence today during a live demo at the Paul Farquharson Conference Centre, Police Headquarters.

This afternoon’s launch in predominantly hotspot areas, comes just two months after the contract signing between The Government of The Bahamas and ShotSpotter Technology in January of this year.  The ShotSpotter Technology is expected to bolster the strategic efforts of the Royal Bahamas Police Force to combat gun-related crime specifically homicides which saw a 25 percent drop last year, a first in nearly a decade.

“We are pleased that we have arrived at a major milestone and another promise delivered by this Government,” said National Security Minister, Hon. Marvin H. Dames.

The live demo was a reenactment of what will happen if shots are fired, illustrating the acoustics of the system and the police response time by the Mobile Division whose cars are equipped with devices to receive alerts from the ShotSpotter System.

“ShotSpotter officially went live today and demonstrates The Government of The Bahamas’ commitment to equip our law enforcement agencies with the best available technologies to assist in the protection of our citizens, visitors and the national security of our nation,” he said, “and there is much more to come.”

ShotSpotter Technology which uses a network of microphones in coverage areas and filters out noises such as cars backfiring and fireworks, will triangulate data from the microphones and provide real time analytics to officers when a gunshot is fired.
