In wake of the global spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel Corona Virus, Governor-General, H.E. Cornelius A. Smith today announced that the nationwide volunteer program slated to launch on March 16, 2020 has been postponed.
“In an abundance of caution and in observance of the necessary protocols relative to this highly contagious disease, we have been professionally advised to delay the launch event which would have seen a gathering of hundreds of persons, including school-aged children, to the grounds of Government House,” said the Governor-General. “We are reminded of our obligation in times such as this and seek to encourage responsibility across all sectors.”
The "Volunteer Bahamas" programme will serve to support and enhance the efforts of existing volunteer groups and organizations throughout the country.
Updates on a new launch date will be forthcoming.
Currently, there are no confirmed or expected cases of COVID-19 in The Bahamas.
