The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture is pleased to inform of the successful conclusion of the 2019 High School National Track and Field Championships held at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium, from 21st to 23rd March, 2019.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, with the support of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) and cooperation of the National Sports Authority welcomed athletes from throughout The Bahamas to participate in the fierce but friendly competition while also having the opportunity to break old records, establish new ones and possibly earn a qualifying spot on the 2019 CARIFTA Team. 

This important ‘meet’ ensures the ongoing development of the sport of track and field, the high level training and exposure necessary for the enhancement of our up-and-coming athletes, allows the country and sports professionals to identify local talent while building comradery, national pride and team spirit among our youth.

We are pleased to report that the meet attracted 1,461 athletes from 62 schools throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.  Of this number, 430 athletes from 29 Family Island schools participated in the Championships, including first time participants from Grand Cay All-aged School, Abaco.  This speaks to the Ministry’s continued efforts and commitment to ensure an inclusive process in Sports by providing access and opportunity for all.

In continuation of its tradition, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture will provide the annual Penn Relay Incentive Awards to the winners of under 20 Boys and Girls 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays.  The winners are as follows:

            Queen’s College Boys 4 X 400m relay

            St. Augustine’s College Girls 4 X 100 and 4 X 4 m relays

            Tabernacle Baptist Boys 4 X 100m relay

The Ministry is pleased to note that as a result of the Championships, 14 new CARIFTA qualifying standards were achieved and multiple new championship records set.  We thank all athletes, coaches, parents and as many who supported and contributed to the success of this event.

We wish all CARIFTA qualifying athletes, continued good health and every success as they move closer to competing in the CARIFTA Games scheduled for next month in the Cayman Islands and Barbados, respectively.
