As we embark on another Commonwealth Day, we take this time to reflect on the diversity, relationships and cultures and common values that connect our counties. It is these common values that allow us to share our ideas and perspectives for “Delivering A Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming”, the theme for this year’s Commonwealth Day and the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2020).

Across the Commonwealth of Nations, we celebrate the core values and principles connecting us, which facilitates each of us being able to tap into knowledge and skills for the development of our women, youth and society at large. Through its efforts, programmes and initiatives, the Commonwealth continues not only to see growth in each nation but also among the Commonwealth family itself. Membership of the Commonwealth increased from 53 to 54 when it welcomed the Maldives back into the fold on 1 February 2020.

The Commonwealth’s task of Delivering a Common Future for our societies furthers its efforts made in innovation through: the Commonwealth Innovation Hub for the sharing of ideas and technology; the Commonwealth Blue Charter for the protection and safe use of our oceans; and the Commonwealth Youth Council, which allows for young people to be a part of the policy development process.

In June, the Commonwealth Heads of Government are scheduled to meet in Kigali, Rwanda, to discuss how to further these core values of connecting and innovating for the transformation of our respective nations and societies. Heads are to reflect on the importance of committing to advancing democracy and good governance, and the education and empowerment of women and youth through entrepreneurship. Heads are also to deliberate on the protection and conservation of the environment and ways to combat climate change and build disaster resilience. Combatting climate change is not just a priority but a way of life. Commitments made at CHOGM would allow for the development of new programmes and initiatives for delivering a safer, more sustainable and prosperous world.

As we celebrate Commonwealth Day, let us continue to inspire each other to be the positive change through kindness, friendship and building community as we look towards the future.
