A Marine Mammal Research Permit is required for properly qualified persons to engage in scientific research activities within The Bahamas, which is directed towards any species of marine mammals. Persons who would be interested in this type of permit include the following:

  • Local foreign tertiary institutes.
  • Local and foreign companies authorized to hold marine mammals.
  • Individual researchers (local and foreign).

 


Eligibility 

There are no eligibility criteria for this service.

Process 
  1. Complete the relevant application form.
  2. Submit completed application form along with the required supporting documents to the Department of Marine Resources.
  3. Upon approval of the application, the applicant will be required to pay the required fee.
  4. Permit will then be issued to the applicant.

Application for a Permit to Conduct Scientific Research on Marine Mammals/Marine Mammal Products

Supporting Documents 

First time applicants are required to submit the following:

  1. Completed application form.
  2. Copies of CVs for the researchers.
  3. A passport sized photo.
  4. A letter of recommendation (if available).
  5. Names of any publications.
  6. Academic qualifications.
  7. Completed past research projects to establish validity of research.
  8. Copies of passport of all persons named on the application.

Usually a permit is valid for one year. For persons wishing to renew   their permit after one year, a letter with a request for renewal must be submitted to the Department of Marine Resources.

Five to ten business days
Deadline 
Researchers must have a permit before they start their research.
