UNEP Integrated Landscape Management Project to be launched in 7 islands says Environment Minister

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Issues of land degradation and climate reduction are being addressed by The Bahamas Government and stakeholders.
The Hon. Vaughn Miller, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources, announced the implementation of “Integrated Landscape Management for Addressing Land Degradation, Food Security and Climate Resilience Challenges in The Bahamas” a project sponsored by the Bahamas Government (through the Department of Environmental Planning & Protection (DEEP) in collaboration with United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) with funding from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
Minister Miller made the announcement during a ceremony to launch the UNEP Integrated Landscape Management Project Thursday, November 24 at Margaritaville Beach Resort. Among those in attendance were government officials and representatives of UNEP, IICA and One Eleuthera Foundation.
He informed that the project is expected to result in improved livelihoods, well-being, and global environment benefits through improvements in the sustainability, productivity, health and resilience of productive ecosystems.
Seven islands -- Abaco, Andros, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Long Island, Grand Bahama and New Providence have been selected to conduct the project.
“The islands selected are home to the largest concentration of the country’s population and contain significant natural and biological resources that underpin the economy,” said Minister Miller.
He informed that some of these islands recently experienced “intense” hurricanes that severely impacted landscapes, worsening land degradation and directly affecting ecosystems and livelihoods, hence the need for intervention.
