GIS Day 2004

The Bahamas National Geographic Information Systems (BNGIS) Centre, operating under the auspices of the Office of the Prime Minister, hosted its GIS DAY Celebration, Wednesday 17th November 2004 under the theme “Geography and GIS Technology in Action in The Bahamas”.

GIS Day is a global event, which is being planned for thousands of GIS users around the world to promote an understanding of geography and the many benefits of using this technology (visit ESRI website www.gisday.com for more details). In The Bahamas and as a part of the Centre’s Public Awareness Program, the Centre was delighted to have students participate in exciting GIS Day activities. The 2004 GIS Day event focussed on the use of GIS by various organizations in The Bahamas and viewing the Centre's GIS Map Gallery.

This event provided an interesting opportunity for public/private sectors and students alike on the reactivation of the BNGIS Centre and to showcase the applicability of GIS and computer-aided mapping to solve real world issues.

The venue for the event was the BNGIS Centre, Bay and Armstrong Streets where all offices were converted into spaces for various agencies to present and showcase GIS applications. Over 100 persons attended from private and public sectors and students from Doris Johnson Senior High School and The College of The Bahamas attended. Local and international Exhibitors were invited to showcase how GIS technology is used in their organizations.
