Miscellaneous vehicles include vehicles with any hydraulic operating parts or hydraulic lifts.  An M plate is issued to miscellaneous vehicles.  Before an M plate can be on the road the owner of the vehicle must obtain a letter from the Ministry of Works & Urban Development that reads “Permit to operate Special Vehicles on Public Roads”.  This letter must accompany the other documents when registering a miscellaneous vehicle with the Department of Road Traffic.
A list with examples of miscellaneous vehicles is shown below:

  • Tractor head and trailer (oversized).
  • Tow Trucks (wreckers).
  • Dump Trucks.
  • Pumping Trucks (gas, sewage, water, etc.).
  • Forklift.
  • Crane.
  • Backhoe.
  • Vehicles transporting jet skies.

Note: If a vehicle is more than 30 feet long, 8 feet wide and 12 feet high, it is considered oversized.


Eligibility 

The applicant must be a citizen/permanent resident of The Bahamas.  

Process 
  1. Obtain an application form "A Permit To Operate A Special Vehicle Or Trailer" from the central services division, Ministry of Works & Urban Development.
  2. Complete and submit the application form along with all supporting documents listed below to the Ministry of Works & Urban Development or local administrator.
  3. The Clerk will verify all relevant information and issue the Letter.
