Skills for Current and Future Jobs in The Bahamas

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Skills for Current and Future Jobs in The Bahamas program seeks to reduce unemployment by improving the employability of Bahamians between 16-40 years old and to increase the access to quality jobs in The Bahamas through three components:

  1. Developing local skills through The Bahamas Apprenticeship Program.
  2. Modernizing the Department of Labour services to improve job placement and to better match job seekers with employers.
  3. Contributing to the development of measurement tools that can effectively assess the performance of the local labour market.

 

DEVELOPING LOCAL SKILLS - THE BAHAMAS APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

The Bahamas Apprenticeship Program is the first component of the Skills for Current and Future Jobs in The Bahamas program. This component consists of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship skills-based training programs for people between 16-40 years old throughout The Bahamas. Three sectors with high growth potential have been selected as a focus for the training programs: maritime, medical and allied services, and information communication technology (ICT). Employer-led Sector Skill Councils will provide input and technical expertise to create relevant skills training.

 

APPRENTICESHIPS

  • 12-month training for 16-40 year olds
  • Structured on-the-job training (80%) and related off-the-job training (20%)
  • Learn a skilled occupation and receive an industry-recognized certification
  • Qualify with work experience, academic qualifications or by successfully completing the Pre-Apprenticeship program

PRE-APPRENTICESHIPS

  • 16-week training for 16-26 year olds
  • Gain soft skills like time management and communication, math and english skills, and workplace exposure
  • Receive a workplace-recognized certificate

MODERNIZING DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR SERVICES

Improvements in software, hardware and infrastructure to improve the services offered by the Department of Labour comprise the second component of the Skills for Current and Future Jobs in The Bahamas program. These improvements seek to modernize labour intermediation services by engaging with employers in a 21st century setting and promoting better placement of job seekers and a better match with employers. The modernization plan will include a new, one-stop-shop location for the Department of Labour where job seekers can receive centralized information in an environment that is best suited to their needs.

 

IMPROVING LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION

Contributing to the development of a robust Labour Market Information System (LMIS) is the third component of the Skills for Current and Future Jobs in The Bahamas program. The LMIS is intended to assist with coordinating efforts of different government agencies involved in collecting data to monitor the performance of the local labour market. This component also seeks to enhance the ability of the Department of Statistics to make use of the improved data collection and improve the government’s responsiveness to the needs of the labour market.
