The National Anti-Drug Secretariat

The National Anti-Drug Secretariat (NADS), a unit of the Ministry of National Security, has been established to bring focused efforts to the control of illicit drugs in The Bahamas due to its impact on the prevalence of crime in the country.  

Functions

  • Coordinates the activities of all of the national agencies which are involved in drug control.
  • Ensures that The Bahamas is a participant in regional and international fora relating to drug control.
  • Provides data and analysis on the drug situation to policy-makers and stakeholders, through the National Drug Observatory which is located in the Secretariat.
  • Conducts scientific surveys aimed at determining the prevalence of drugs and incidence of usage.
  • Functions as the national focal point for all drug-related information received or sent out of the country.
  • Periodically reviews and updates, as necessary, The Bahamas' National Anti-Drug Plan in conjunction with stakeholders.

NADS Activities

NADS carries out its function through the sponsorship of a number of initiatives.  These include:
 

  • Monthly Stakeholders Meeting comprising government agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
  • Bahamas National Drug Awareness Week, which is celebrated each year during the month of June, leading up to the 26th day of June, which is celebrated as the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
  • International Committee Meetings to plan the activities for National Drug Awareness Week.  The activities include:  A church service, a march of solidarity against drugs, anti drug exhibitions, panel discussions on the dangers of drug use and abuse; and public service announcements.
