Junior Junkanoo is a competitive display of indigenous Junkanoo music, dance, and festive costumes by primary and secondary schools in New Providence and visiting Family Islands schools.  Junior Junkanoo caters for ages 3 – 18 years.

Before schools in New Providence, Grand Bahama, and the Family Islands can participate in Junkanoo festivals, they must be registered with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Department of Culture.

Eligibility

Child must be enrolled in one of the following:

  • Pre-School
  • Primary School
  • Junior High School
  • Senior High School
Process
  1. Interested schools may collect registration forms from the Department of Culture. When registration forms are collected, the school is also given a copy of the Junkanoo rules.
  2. Registration forms must be filled out and submitted to the Department of Culture.
  3. New schools must also submit a written request for seed funding to the Department of Culture.  The written request should include a list of all of your needs.
  4. Funds are allocated to the school based on the designated seed funding and cheques are allocated to school.
  5. Schools are then called to collect their cheques.  The collecting officer must bring a letter of authorisation from the principal, along with photo ID to collect cheque.
  6. Schools are also required to sign a Seed Funding agreement.  Among other things, the agreement states that if funds are not used for the Junkanoo festivals, then the school must repay the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture by the January 2nd after that year’s Junkanoo Parade.

In the case of schools located on the Family Islands, cheques will be disbursed to Family Island Administrator for collection.

In addition to the seed funding, the school may also request assistance with material from the Department of Culture.
