Technical Assistance To The Port Department And The International Marine Organization During The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill In The Gulf Of Mexico

As a member of the National Emergency Management (NEMA) Emergency Support Function (ESF) 5 (Planning and Information) and 10b (Oil Spill), the BNGIS Centre provided technical support to the Port Department (lead agency for Oil Spills) and the United States International Marine Organization (IMO).

This technical assistance provided by the BNGIS Centre was a result of The Bahamas Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (Gulf of Mexico) activities. The production of initial Environmental Sensitivity Maps for The Bahamas created under the instruction of specialists from Dr. C. Tiercelin and Commander Ramos, International Marine Organization (reference: Bahamas Deepwater Horizon “Incident Action Plan”). Maps were produced using GIS, in-house spatial data resources and Google Earth.

The BNGIS Centre also provided technical assistance to the Port Department in producing preliminary maps of the Harbour in consideration of Dredging activities.
