JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT
THE JUDICIARY
COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS

 

The Judicial and Legal Service Commission invites applications for the position of Justice of the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas from suitably qualified persons.

 

The Supreme Court is a superior court of record and has unlimited original jurisdiction in civil and criminal matters together with such appellate jurisdiction as conferred upon it by the Supreme Court Act and other laws in The Bahamas.

 

Applicants must be:

  1. A member of the Bar of The Bahamas who has practiced for a period of not less than ten years; or
  2. A member of at least ten years standing of any Bar in any Commonwealth country membership of which is a qualification for admission to practice as counsel and attorney in The Bahamas under the provisions of The Legal Profession Act, Ch. 64 of the 2000 Revised Statute Laws of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

The duties of a Justice of the Supreme Court are those of a Judge of a court of unlimited jurisdiction.

Alternatively, Application Forms may be obtained from the office of the Judicial & Legal Service Commission, 4th Floor, Annex 1 (formerly the Ansbacher Building), Bank Lane. Applications must be submitted to the Secretary of the Commission by email to jlsc@courts.gov.bs or delivered by hand to the office of the Secretary in Annex 1.

 

Appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court is made under Article 94 of the Constitution and the tenure of office is governed by Article 96.

 

The closing date for submission of Applications is 4 November, 2022. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to take office on an agreed date during the first quarter of 2023.
