52-Week Skills Empowerment Programme

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

 

The 52-Week Skills Empowerment Programme 2018 is a job initiative of the Government of The Bahamas to provide unemployed persons between the ages of 19 years to 30 years with hands-on skills to find gainful employment based on the training received.  This programme, funded by the Bahamas Government, will last for 52 weeks.

The Programme will be launched with soft-skills training, designed and implemented by the National Training Agency. Participants in the Programme must successfully complete the training in order to receive certification of their completion.Some of the main areas of training include skills development required for Patient Care Assistants, teachers’ aides, landscaping, caregivers for the elderly and various construction trades. The Ministry is partnering with the National Training Agency and the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute to provide the necessary training.The Ministry also invites the participation of the private sector. 

Conditions of Engagement 

All participants will serve for a period of fifty-two (52) weeks, during which assessments of performance will be conducted every quarter. Normal working hours are five (5) days a week and eight (8) hours a day or forty (40) hours per week. Hours of work are normally 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. with a one (1) hour lunch break. In some cases, the work might dictate otherwise. Attendance and punctuality records will be kept for each participant. 

Private Sector Participation 

Private Sector businesses are invited to participate in the programme. The Government of The Bahamas will assume payment for the salaries for the duration of the 52 weeks except where the business wishes to employ full time. In order to participate the Private Sector Business must: • Be tax compliant • Submit monthly tax compliance certificates, where applicable • Submit quarterly appraisal reports for each participant • State by the end of the 3rd quarter its intention to retain or release the participant • Confirm that it will not terminate any existing staff upon obtaining the services of a 52-Week Participant • Keep weekly attendance and punctuality records for each participant • Submit Time-Sheets for each participant every two-weeks • Report and submit all leave taken and reason for leave • Report any breaches within 24 hours
