What is counseling?

Counseling is a skilled process which enables clients to explore concerns, difficulties and problematic areas. Some clients may not have any significant problems areas, but just want to be "listened to" and understood. Counseling provides the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings, concerns, difficulties and problem areas with a qualified professional. Clients are respected for who they are, with unconditional, positive regard and acceptance in a non-judgmental environment.

Rationale of Counseling

The process of counseling gives you a clearer understanding of your experience with drug addiction and will assist in identifying existing choices and coping strategies. You identify areas of concerns and difficulties and are empowered with skills to make your own decisions and choices. You explore values, express feelings, find solutions to problems, develop options, and change behaviour. You learn skills that enable you to take responsibility for your choices, decisions and life, in doing so, you can achieve a more confident, fulfilling and illicit drug-free life. Counseling works!

Types of Counseling

  • Individual counseling focuses on helping the client resolve personal or interpersonal issues, caused by ingrained beliefs or world-views, that are and often manifested by negative emotions, poor self-esteem and/or angry reactions.
  • Group counseling focuses on persons with similar concerns/issues and to provide effective support (6 -10 persons).
  • Family counseling focuses on families whose relationships and/or interpersonal communications have become distant or violent.
