Conveyance refers to the documentation of the transfer of ownership of land from one party to another.  During conveyance exercises the Minister responsible for Housing transfers to purchasers the title to properties that were sold by him or her.   The execution of a conveyance is the final step to obtain ownership of government houses/lots.   The owners must visit the Department of Housing in person to sign the Conveyance documents.  However, where an approved lender is unable to obtain a mortgage loan, due to some impediment on the part of the purchaser, the offer of a mortgage loan will be withdrawn, and the Ministry of Housing and the prospective purchaser is so informed.

Eligibility

Home owners (citizens and permanent residents of The Bahamas) who have paid for the lot or made arrangements for payment through a lending agency.

Process
  1. The home owner must visit the Department of Housing in person to complete the conveyance exercise.
  2. Grand Bahama and Abaco can complete the conveyance exercise at the Department of Housing offices on those islands.
  3. Purchasers on other family islands may execute their section of the document before a witness and have it notarised by the Family Island Administrator.
  4. The conveyance will not be prepared unless payment is made in full verified by an official receipt or an official communication is received from a financial institution stating that mortgage loan arrangements are in place.
  5. Once all requirements are fulfilled, the Department of Housing will contact the home owner to complete the conveyance exercise.
  6. The conveyance is usually signed and witnessed at the Department of Housing, however arrangements can be made for the purchaser to execute his section of the document before a witness and a Notary Public.
