In accordance with the Housing Act, all persons wishing to build for the Ministry of the Environment and Housing must be approved by the Minister responsible for Housing. To become an approved builder, builders/contractors must apply to the Department of Housing for an Approved Builder Status Certificate.
Once approved, a builder must comply with the Regulations in the Housing Act, Chapter 199. Please follow the links below for additional information.
Contractors or Builders who are Bahamian citizens or permanent residents.
- Interested persons must fill out the Application for Approved Builders Status form.
- Submit application form, along with all relevant documents in support of your application to any of the offices listed below.
- Once all required documents are submitted, the application is reviewed and a site inspection is scheduled with a field officer. Note: The Applicant must be present for the site inspection.
- On the day of the inspection, the inspector will assess the quality of the builder’s work.
- If the quality of work is deemed acceptable, the applicant will be issued with an acceptance letter and an Approved Builder Status Certificate. If unsuccessful, the applicant will be issued a letter informing him / her of such.
- Proof of Nationality (Passport or voters card)
- Current National Insurance Certificate
- Copy of national insurance board compliance letter
- Up-to-date Business License
- Grand Bahama Port Authority Business Licence (For Freeport Application)
- Reference from the Family Island Administrator or Department of Public Works Area Engineer ( for Family islands)
- A reference letter and photos of the last building constructed and completed, preferably 2 of the completed building & 1 of the building under construction.
- Credit/Bank Reference
- Credit/Sales References from Building Suppliers
- 3 Personal References (persons who would be willing to comment on your capability as a builder)
- A reference from the area engineer ( Ministry of Works and Transport)
- Reference from the town planning office
An Approved Builders Status Certificate takes a period of two to four weeks.
There is no deadline associated with this service.
There are no fees associated with this service. Subject to the Housing Act, changes to the fee may be made at the discretion of The Minister responsible for Housing.
