As a part of the BNGIS Centre’s mission to advance the use of modern technologies in the Civil Service, training in Global Positioning Systems goes hand in hand with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
GPS training for governmental agencies may be conducted by international specialists, the BNGIS Centre and strategic partners with GPS expertise. Generally training may be conducted over a two to three day period and in some cases GPS training is designed to meet agency specific needs and may be conducted at agency offices or at the BNGIS Centre’s Training Facility. Training includes various modules including background lecture, GPS Field exercise to reinforce data collection techniques and allow GPS students to get hands on operations of the GPS hand held units. Training also includes a compact GPS processing and downloading to GIS session.
GPS/GIS system provides the ability for operators to locate, identify, attribute and map the various components of their systems while creating a database to store, evaluate, analyze, and retrieve system information.
At the Centre GPS training has been provided to over 35 governmental agencies and schools as a part of a Land Information Management Project, GI Education Project, Agency specific needs and Special technical assistance programs hosted by the BNGIS Centre.
The GPS training plays an essential role in equipping Public Service officials with modern tools to support business operations including, but not limited to, asset and fleet management, vehicular tracking for security services, urban planning and recording existing land use, topographic mapping, detail criminal activities and much more.. Its use is especially beneficial to the collection of data in far flung areas of The Bahamas that will lead to the better management, inventory of roads, utilities, marine resources and matters of the environment at large.
