The “no blame” approach to counseling and therapy is employed. Children are constantly reassured that we believe what they are saying. Clients are questioned, using open ended, divergent questions, and “drawn out”, using language that is age specific. Other methods used include “parallel speaking” or echoing exact words and language used by the child. Sometimes, the social worker uses anatomical dolls and diagrams.

All of these are employed to obtain full disclosure. This is a cornerstone of healing – when feelings are suppressed, far reaching, negative consequences are often initiated that may take years to fully come to light. No doubt, a ripple effect often occurs in abuse.

Pre-Examination Counseling

Regrettably, the physical examination needed in assessing physical and sexual abuse is, of itself, often intimidating and invasive, and can be further traumatising. We have found that often, when clients are told what to expect during the examination and why it is done in terms that they can understand, they are less fearful and more accommodating. Young children are even allowed to see and touch some of the instruments that will be used during the examination.

Please note that all sessions are strictly confidential, and usually involve the client and the facilitator, however, for family therapy, the entire family may be asked to attend.  Also noteworthy is that any notes taken during the sessions are also treated with the strictest confidence, except in instances where clients expresses intent to harm themselves or the files / notes are required as evidence in a legal case.

Anyone can access this service

1.  Referral is made by physician or social worker. Alternatively, anyone suspecting child abuse can report it directly to the SCAN Unit or any other Community Health Clinic.
2. Guardian (or non-offending parent) is required to attend. Police and/or social worker may also attend.
3. Obtain counseling appointment from health-care provider on SCAN Team.
4. Honour appointment. (In the event that appointment cannot be made, please “reschedule”.)
5. Participate in counseling session.
6. Follow recommendations prescribed.
7. Attend all subsequent counseling sessions.
8. Report any “negative” behaviour occurring at home.

There are no application forms for this service.
