Technical Support - The Department of Civil Aviation

The BNGIS Centre explores data access and sharing of relevant data regarding Airspace Obstruction particularly for use by the Ministry of The Environment’s Planning Agency (the Department of Physical Planning). In particular discussions focused on having the capacity to utilize modern technologies such as GIS and GPS for not only addressing matters related Airspace Protection and Obstruction Marking and Lighting, Airdrome requirements etc. but also to support the planning application approval process. Planners must be able to visualize zones that are restricted based on civil aviation standards these include areas for the flight of aircraft during takeoff, maneuvering, or landing. When planning to build or modify a building structure one of the considerations must be the impact of the structure on the national airspace system.

As such GIS data needed to support planning may include:

  • Planning no build zones (Hazard zones) to minimize if not eliminate building structure’s potential impact on the navigable airspace.
  • Runway start and endpoint data (including planned runways and runway extensions.
  • Airport property boundaries.
  • List of current objects Affecting Navigable Airspace.
  • Guidelines regarding land use near airports etc.
