History of BNGIS

In the late 1980s it was realized by a technical committee (chaired by the late Ivern Davis, former Director, Department of Physical Planning) in the Ministry of Public Works that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) could assist managers in land use planning and utility infrastructure management. This realization led to a series of GIS projects commencing in 1990 to 2005. Over this period of time the BNGIS evolved as a small unit operating from a room at the rear compound of the Ministry of Works. The first official post (GIS technical Supervisor) was established in 1994. In 1998 the Unit officially adopted its new name The Bahamas National Geographic Information Systems Centre and was transferred that same year to the Office of The Prime Minister, Lands and Surveys Department. In 2004 The Centre was officially established in the Government Hierarchy with the assignment of the first GIS Director.

Today, the BNGIS Centre operates under the auspices of The Ministry The Environment and Housing (since May 2012) with offices located at Bay and Armstrong Streets. The Centre has been involved in various activities associated with its mission which is to promote, educate, coordinate and advance the practical and efficient use of GIS technology in The Bahamas and continues to provide invaluable assistance to governmental agencies as required.
