Biography

The Hon. Lawrence Larry Cartwright, the Member of Parliament for Long Island and Ragged Island was sworn in as Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources by the Hon. Arthur D. Hanna on May 7, 2007, following the May 2, general election.

He was born on January 19, 1948 in Gray's Long Island to Delbert Cartwright and the former Emma Wells.

He received his early education at Gray's Public School and later earned his teaching certificate from The Bahamas Teacher's College in 1968. He completed a Bachelors of Arts degree in Education at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in 1980.

He served 31 years as a teacher and ended his career as principal of NGM Major High School, Buckley's, Long Island.
As an experienced farmer, he cultivated bananas, vegetables and citrus from 1987 to 2000 and raised livestock. He also dabbled in fishing during the period 1999 to 2001.

He is an active participant in the Long Island Sailing Club and in the Long Island Association and is the founder of the Earlie Knowles Memorial Regatta for juniors.

He is a member of the vestry of St. Paul's Anglican Church and a member of the Anglican Council of Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas Turks and Caicos Islands.

He is married to the former Theresa Antoinette Ann Cartwright and the couple have three sons.
