NASSAU, The Bahamas - The Government of The Bahamas has signed a Heads of Agreement with Club Med for the reopening of the resort on San Salvador. The resort was closed over two years ago as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The signing was held at the Office of the Prime Minister, September 15, 2022.  In attendance was Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis who said that this was another great day for the country.  He also touted the benefits of the re-opening of the resort .

“This is a great day for the people of San Salvador as this HOA marks the re-opening of the resort,” said Prime Minister Davis. “The investment to date of this resort is north of $100 million and the impact is some $15 million coming in every week. This is not only impactful for San Salvador, but also for the country as a whole.” 

The company has also invested an additional $5 million to facilitate the reopening, with the government allocating some $3 million to facilitate upgrade infrastructure on the island, including upgrades to clinics, the water system and electrical systems.  Mr. Davis also said that work at the airport is also in progress. 

Senior Vice-President, Development (Americas) and General Counsel, Club Med, Eileen Kett thanked the Prime Minister and the people of The Bahamas for their support, and said that the company has enjoyed a 30-year history with The Bahamas. 

“It was heartbreaking for us to close our doors as a result of the pandemic, therefore we are elated to be re-opening again. We have built strong relationships with the people of San Salvador and are tied to the community in so many ways.” She discussed some of the outreach initiatives that have been conducted by the resort and said that they are looking forward to continuing them. They include French language and culinary classes for local children, and environmental awareness programmes. 

According to Ms. Kett, approximately 70 percent of the staff will be re-employed. It is expected that some 200 persons will be employed directly and indirectly to run the operations of the resort.  Airlift agreements have been made with Air Canada, Air Caraibes and Bahamasair.   The reopening is scheduled for October 22.
