(MNS-JFK, 04 MAR. 2023): The Honorable Carlos Del Toro, Secretary of the United States Navy, paid a courtesy call on the Commander Defence Force, Commodore Dr. Raymond King, on March 1st, 2023, at the Orville Turnquest Building, John. F. Kennedy Drive. 

 

Accompanied by U.S. Embassy Senior Defence Official, Captain Greg Gellman, and representatives from the US Embassy, matters of mutual interests were discussed. In attendance were Under Secretaries in the Ministry of National Security Lisa Hall and Brenda Dorsett and the RBDF Executive Team.  During the visit, gifts were exchanged between both countries, signifying its ongoing mutual partnership.

 

Following the visit, the Secretary Del Toro, accompanied by Chargé d’Affaires Usha Pitts and Deputy Assistant of Defence for the Western Hemisphere, Daniel P. Erikson, along with U.S. Embassy Senior Defence Officials arrived at the University of The Bahamas for the presentation on climate change by Mr. Del Toro.

 

In recognition of the existential threat posed by climate change, he brought remarks outlining what the United States is doing to assist Caribbean nations that are negatively affected by hurricanes and other climate phenomenon. Secretary Del Toro also advised of the partnerships now in existence with the University of Monterey and the University of the Bahamas. He pledged his support to training of oceanographers and others concerned with climate and ecology. Members of the public and civil society as well as students attended the presentation and participated in a question-and-answer period to addresses issues on climate change.

 

The Minister of National Security, the Honorable Wayne Munroe, KC, MP, also brought remarks on behalf of the Prime Minister.
