Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Two Family Islands are on target for new schools beginning late 2022 or 2023.

The Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin, Minister of Education and Technical & Vocational Training informed the House of Assembly that funds have been budgeted for the construction of schools in Exuma and San Salvador. She made her contribution to the 2022-2023 Budget Debate, Monday, June 13.

The budgeted cost for the construction of George Town Primary School and San Salvador High School is $16 M each. The expected completion date for both institutions is 2024. The projects are a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Education and Technical & Vocational Training.

Minister Martin announced that plans are being finalized for construction of several classroom blocks and an administration building at the Harbour Island Comprehensive School.  She said structural issues at this institution must be addressed.

Construction of East End Grand Bahama Comprehensive School and Inagua Comprehensive School are set to commence in 2023/2024.

Moreover, Minister Hanna-Major told Parliamentarians that on-going new school projects which were stalled or seemingly abandoned will be completed.

They are as follows:

1. Staniel Cay Comprehensive $1,946,503.49 (Expected completion August 2022).
2. Holmes Rock Junior High $19,610,357.92 (Expected completion September 2022).
3. Lowe Sound Primary $10,281,066.42 (Expected completion September 2023).
4. Arthur’s Town, High, Cat Island -- 3 classroom blocks to be built this summer.
5. Coopers Town, Abaco – 3 classroom blocks to be built this summer.
6. Emma Cooper Primary, Eleuthera -- complete unfinished classroom block this summer.
