The Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre’s (SRC) annual Occupational Therapy Month opening ceremony launched. the institution’s month-long campaign to raise awareness and celebrate the practice of Occupational Therapy. The 2022 theme “Empowering Everyday Living,” emphasizes the use of everyday life activities (occupations) with individuals or groups for the purpose of enhancing or enabling the recovery or development of progress toward therapeutic goals.

PHA Chairman, Mr. Andrew Edwards, who delivered remarks on behalf of the Minister of Health & Wellness. Chairman Edward noted, “The Occupational Therapist is an indispensable member of the health care team providing services to people of all ages with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities.” He further highlighted, “OT is an essential function of Sandilands and a key specialty in the realization of this institution’s core mandate.” Also bringing remarks at the opening were Ms. Heather Hanlin, Director of Rehabilitation Services PHA and Ms. Charlis Robin President Occupational Therapy Association Bahamas.

The activities planned for the month began with a church service at New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church on April 3rd and includes a talent show on 14th April, skills training sessions and educational sessions on 22nd and 26th April as well as a fundraising raffle on 28th April. The month will end with a staff retreat planned for 29th April.

One of the highlights of the month is the Art Exhibition scheduled for 21st April, which showcases artwork by both clients and staff as part of Sandilands’ Creative Recovery Program. Chairman Edwards noted, “Sandilands’ OT team, together with support from the artistic community and volunteers, have incorporated art-based activities into treatment, resulting in increased self-expression, the development of skills for occupational participation, and the establishment of daily routines. With this exhibition Sandilands not only celebrates the creative visions expressed by clients and staff but showcases the benefits of an innovative therapy modality that is helping to improve client’s health outcomes and quality of life.”

As part of the official ceremony, SRC Hospital Administrator Ms. Jessica Cartwright joined Chairman Edwards in recognizing the OT Staff of the Year 2022/3, Mrs. Tonya Griffin.
