NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Department of Inland Revenue of the Ministry of Finance held a press conference Wednesday, April 12, 2023 on compliance and enforcement at its offices on Carmichael Road.
Acting Controller Shunda Strachan said “we have noticed trends where businesses are claiming not to have records and not to have any idea of what is being made per day, week, month or year.”  She said businesses found in this position will face fines and possible prosecution especially if found to be trying to avoid making payments owed.  The Controller said the department does not want to see businesses closed or see persons lose their land. The department has its mandate to collect what is owed to the government. She advised that persons in these positions can make contact with the Department and they can come to some agreement before this occurs.  Strachan suggested that persons and businesses be honest about their situations and achieve the best results.  Pictured are Shunda Strachan, Acting Controller, and Dexter Fernander of Inland Revenue/Operations.   (BIS Photo/Patrick Hanna)
