NASSAU, The Bahamas - Dr. Ruth Kattumuri, Senior Director of Economic, Youth and Sustainable Development Directorate, Commonwealth Secretariat, in the UK, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Health and Wellness the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville at his ministry on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. Also present were Permanent Secretary Colin Higgs, and Dr. Philip Swann, Acting Chief Medical Officer. Talks focused on a number of health issues plaguing The Bahamas, the region and Commonwealth Member States namely Cervical Cancer and the aim to eliminate it by 2030, mental health issues, universal health care, catastrophic healthcare services and curbing the high incidence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Dr. Darville also spoke about a health adaptation plan to deal with Climate Change and the challenges on the Family Islands to duplicate health care resources and infrastructure. During further discussions, India and The Bahamas pledged to work on a number of initiatives leading into the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP 27) to take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in November.
