Minister of National Security Addresses ‘CARICOM’s Second National Consultation on Youth Crime and Violence’
The Minister of National Security addressing participants at the ‘Second National Consultation on the Pilot Project: Youth Crime and Violence- Partnering for Social Development and Prevention’ on Tuesday 1st April, 2014. The Ministry of National Security in conjunction with CARICOM sponsored the forum to present the final reports from the two surveys, CARICOM Youth Gangs and Violence In-School Programme – Student Questionnaire’ and ‘Community Mapping and Social Wellbeing Profile.’ Additionally participants engaged in a discussion of both reports and the implementation of recommendations. Ms Beverley Reynolds represented CARICOM at this forum, while Ms Nanika Brathwaite, Ministry of Health, was the Consultant, that provided the surveys analyses. |
Officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force were among the invited participants, in attendance at this ‘Crime and Violence’ forum, because of the leading role they play in combating crime and maintaining peace and security within The Bahamas. (Tuesday 1st April, 2014) |
Ms Beverley Reynolds, CARICOM’S representative at this ‘Second National Consultation on Youth Crime and Violence forum,’ is captured addressing those gathered at the Paul Farquharson Conference Centre, on Tuesday 1st April, 2014. The Minister of National Security, Hon Bernard Nottage, who also brought remarks, is flanked by Permanent Secretary Carl Smith to his left, who served as Moderator for the opening session and Commissioner Ellison Greenslade, Royal Bahamas Police Force, to his right, who were among those in attendance. It was during this forum that the CARICOM funded analyses of both the school and community surveys, were revealed and all participants had an opportunity in small group settings to make recommendations, based on the findings of the surveys. |
Members of the Citizens’ Security Unit, at The Ministry of National Security were also in attendance. This unit is responsible for initiating numerous activities, namely ‘Crime Fora, in New Providence and Grand Bahama,’ ‘Peace on the Streets Basket Ball Tournaments, between Pastors and Politicians, in several communities, in an effort to foster unity and thereby help to stave off avenues to crime.
